COEUR D'ALENE, IDAHO -- A child's red palms and soles may not be signs of Kawasaki syndrome, Dr. Bernice Krafchik said at the annual meeting of the Pacific Northwest Dermatological Society.
When a young boy presented with lesions around his lips and redness on his hands and feet, Kawasaki syndrome was the first diagnosis entertained by Dr. Krafchik, head of the section on dermatology, division of pediatric medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, and her associates.
But this boy also had hypertension and hyperhidrosis, symptoms not generally present in Kawasaki syndrome. He also did not show some of the syndrome's classic signs--he was afebrile and there was no swelling on the dorsal surface of the hands and feet.
And he was not alone.
His brother was admitted with exactly the same signs and symptoms. ...
