Women with alopecia have significantly lower iron and hemoglobin levels than do women without the disorder, Dr. Jonathan Kantor said .at the annual meeting of the Society for Investigative Dermatology.
More studies are needed to determine whether iron supplementation might be an effective treatment for alopecia, but it probably would not hurt to give these women iron supplements now anyway, said Dr. Kantor of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
