Gastroesophageal reflux disease is about as prevalent at night as it is during the day, affecting 79% of American adults with heartburn.
That finding emerged from a study presented by Dr. Reza Shaker of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, at the annual Digestive Disease Week.
Of 1,000 Americans who reported having heartburn symptoms within the prior week or who were current users of GERD medication, the reported prevalence of daytime heartburn was 85%, and the prevalence of nighttime heartburn was 79% according to a Gallop telephone survey.
