Only slightly more than half of social phobics in the primary care setting are receiving treatment, Steven E. Bruce, Ph.D., reported at the annual conference of the Anxiety Disorders Association of America.
Dr. Bruce and his colleagues screened more than 4,000 patients in 15 primary care, general medicine, and family medicine clinics in four states. Of 504 patients who were further assessed with a clinical interview, 172 met DSM-IV criteria for social anxiety disorder.
Patients with social phobia had a greater number of comorbidities--a mean of 1.21 current comorbid anxiety disorders, 2.05 current comorbid diagnoses, and 3.1 lifetime disorders--compared with 0.45, 1.19, and 2.05, respectively, for patients with anxiety disorders other than social phobia.
