As tough as it is to help overweight patients achieve sustained weight loss, studies clearly show the success rate is only half as good when patients have type 2 diabetes, Dr. Samuel Klein said at a satellite conference held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society.
"A 5% body weight loss can have significant medical benefits in patients with diabetes," said Dr. Klein of Washington University, St. Louis, who offered the following tips:
Food Strategies. It's important for patients to hear about the positive things they can add to their diet, such as 25-30 g more per day of fiber along with more fruits, vegetables, whole-grain products, and water.
Physicians underutilize meal-replacement therapy with packaged food like Weight Watchers in their diabetic patients. Studies with 4-year follow-up have shown that consuming one or two such meals per day is helpful in maintaining weight loss.
