WASHINGTON -- Low-dose hormone replacement therapy protects against bone loss while causing minimal adverse effects, Dr. Marco Gambacciani said at an international symposium on women's health and menopause.
Long-term compliance with standard-dose hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is poor, said Dr. Gambacciani of the University of Pisa (Italy).
He conducted a study of 60 women aged 45-56 years to determine whether low-dose conjugated estrogens combined with medroxyprogesterone acetate would yield the same bone-protecting benefits in relatively young postmenopausal women as has been observed in older subjects.
Half of the women in the 2-year, open-label trial took conjugated estrogens (0.30 mg/day) plus medroxyprogesterone (2.5 mg/day) and calcium supplements. The other half, serving as controls, took only the calcium supplements. The subjects' mean age was 55, and they had experienced menopause a mean of 4.5 years earlier.
