Ca Risk Lower After Prophylactic Mastectomy.
Prophylactic mastectomy reduced the incidence of breast cancer in women with a mutation of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, said Dr. Hanne Meijers-Heijboer and colleagues at the Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
In a prospective cohort study of women with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene in a breast cancer surveillance program, 76 eventually chose mastectomy, and 63 chose continued surveillance. No cases of breast cancer were reported in the mastectomy group during a mean 2.9-year follow-up.
