WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. -- Although the safety of glyburide in pregnancy has not been definitively proved in studies, physicians should be fairly comfortable using it in the management of gestational diabetes, Dr. Deward Voss said at an ob.gyn. meeting sponsored by the University of Chicago.
Glyburide does not to cross the placenta, and it is not a known teratogen. In addition, gestational diabetes is usually not diagnosed until the second half of pregnancy after organogenesis is complete said Dr. Voss, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati.
Dr. Voss' hospital has adopted glyburide as first-line treatment for patients with gesrational diabetes if they are not getting good glycemic control from diet alone.
