Consumer groups have demanded the government guarantee the safety of chicken sold in markets, instead of merely encouraging people to eat more of it.

The root cause of the problem needs to be targeted, rather than the impact bird flu has on chicken sales and the poultry industry, they said.

The criticism comes as the government plans a huge chicken-eating promotion at Sanam Luang on Saturday.

But the NGO coalition says the government has still to guarantee that even a single poultry farm in the country is free of bird flu.
