Ten sites, including one in Charlotte County, are vying to become a new national veterans cemetery in Southwest Florida.

The sites are a 1,200-acre parcel off Beech Road, east of Punta Gorda, two parcels in North Port, five others in Sarasota County and two in DeSoto County. They are among the initial proposals for the cemetery, which could open by 2007.

But it will be months before all the proposals are in and a decision is made on where the roughly $30 million cemetery will be located.
