PLAY ACTION
by GEORGE WINKLER
Coaching changes are dominating the headlines, and the effects will be big for some key fantasy players. From an offensive standpoint, three situations stand out:
Tom Coughlin, Giants. Under his direction, the Jaguars led the AFC in passing in 1996 and in rushing in 1999. Jacksonville made it to the AFC championship game both years.
A balanced offense would be a boon to Kerry Collins because he'd have more time to throw. The main reason New York struggled last season was because its inexperienced offensive line crumbled under pressure. Coughlin will whip the line into shape because he won't tolerate mistakes. For that same reason, Tiki Barber--with his penchant for fumbling-will be on the spot.
Jim Mora Jr., Falcons. He doesn't have an offensive philosophy because he's a former defensive coordinator, but his offensive coordinator, Greg Knapp, will have to sell the West Coast offense to Michael Vick.
Jeff Garcia thrived under Knapp when he was the 49ers' offensive coordinator. Though Vick has more talent than Garcia, he'll face an adjustment period trying to master the timing and complexities of the system. But if it all clicks for Vick, forget about Garcia. Vick could end up being better than Steve Young.
