Michigan Stats: Buy. The Spartans are far from being the dominant team they were expected to be, but they at least have begun to overcome an ugly start by winning three of their first five Big Ten games. State is developing into a balanced team on offense and now is feeding off of its defense and rebounding, which is a trademark of Tom Izzo's clubs.
That trait usually was absent in Michigan State's 5-7 start. But during a recent three-game winning streak, the Spartans held two opponents to less than 40 percent shooting and outrebounded all three victims by at least eight. Paul Davis, finally, is providing steady play inside on offense, and Chris Hill is flourishing as a 3-point shooter. Kelvin Torbert, Maurice Ager and Shannon Brown also lend offensive firepower.
In a Big Ten that clearly is below standard, expect the Spartans to challenge for the league title.
"Now that the conference season has started, Michigan State has found itself," says Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan. "Michigan State is going to its strength, and it's beginning to play its best ball. I think Michigan State's best is pretty good.
"They're in a position now where they can get it done."
