A few months ago, there was talk that the NFL might dissolve NFL Europe. Thankfully, it didn't happen. The league lives on, giving hope to countless unknown players who dream of playing in the NFL.
Players like Jake Delhomme.
For the better part of six years, Delhomme bided his time on the Saints' practice squad and bench. It would have been easy to give up his dream. But he also spent two seasons in NFL Europe, where his career got the boost it needed.
First, he backed up Kurt Warner in Amsterdam. Delhomme didn't play much, but he practiced with Warner regularly. When Warner struck gold with the Rams a year later, Delhomme knew he could make it in the NFL.
By that time, Delhomme had spent a second season in Europe, leading Frankfurt to a World Bowl championship. Finally, he had gotten the valuable reps that allow a stagnating player to develop skills in game situations. He stuck with it.
I'm glad he did. In his seventh year out of college, he finally got his shot with a new team in September. Look at him now, quarterback of the NFC champion Panthers.
Delhomme is a joy ...
