SEOUL, Feb 2 Asia Pulse - Nearly nine out of every 10 South Koreans believe American beef is not safe enough to eat because of health concerns stemming from the detection of mad cow disease in the United States last month, according to a poll released by a state-run research institute Friday.
The poll, conducted by the Korea Rural Economic Institute on 500 randomly selected consumers, showed that 87.4 per cent said American beef is not safe for consumption, while 66.6 per cent responded negatively toward Australian beef.
More than 34 per cent even cast doubts over the safety of Korean beef, illustrating a high level of distrust in beef following the discovery of the brain-wasting disease in the United States in mid-December.
The survey showed consumption of Korean beef dropped 18.8 per cent on account of psychological factors in the first three weeks after mad cow disease surfaced in the United States.
South Korea is determined to keep its ban on American beef imports despite assurances from the United States of the safety of its products. Korea insists that the U.S. government should take steps to restore consumer confidence in American beef.
