SEOUL, Feb 2 Asia Pulse - LG Electronics Inc. (KSE:066570), South Korea's top electronic appliance maker, and Sony Corp., the Japanese consumer electronics giant, are investigating the cause of a cell phone battery explosion last week.
"The investigation is under way with engineers from Sony and LG Electronics. It may take more than a week to find out the cause of explosion," Park Seung, an official at the Korean company's public relations team, said.
For objectivity, the Consumer Union of Korea, a government-affiliated consumer protection body, is arranging the inquiry, the official said. Sony's Korean unit wasn't immediately available for comment.
LG Electronics, the world's fifth-largest handset maker, was asked by a 54-year-old women, who was only identified by her surname Lee, to investigate the explosion of a cell phone battery it supplied.
The accident happened on Monday around midnight, while Lee was sleeping. The small explosion started a fire on Lee's bed, but caused no injuries because she was in another room. At the time of the blast, the SV-130 phone was not being used and the battery was disconnected.
