SEOUL, Feb 2 Asia Pulse - South Korea Friday decided to establish an emergency health care system to prepare for possible human infections of bird flu.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare said that the contingency system is in line with warnings by the World Health Organization that a possible mutation of the H5NI virus may lead to infections in humans.
"In hospitals located in affected areas, the government will closely monitor whether humans are infected and it will strengthen quarantine measures to prevent the spread of the virus," said the ministry in a meeting with local government officials.
The poultry disease has spread in South Korea since it was first detected in December. But so far, there have been no reports that it has crossed to humans.
Health officials said that none of the more than 1,500 people believed to have been exposed to the flu tested positive. They sent samples from the people to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for testing on Dec. 18.
