(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
Byline: Martin P. Marfil
TWO of the seven commissioners of the Commission on Elections are set to retire tomorrow. One of them, however, Luzviminda Tancangco, said yesterday her retirement had been hastened.
"I was supposed to retire in 2005," Tancangco told the Inquirer in a phone interview. "My term was shortened by a year." And she's not very happy about it.
Tancangco and Commissioner Ralph Lantion, the other retiree, were appointed to the Comelec in 1998 by then President Joseph Estrada. The position is a seven-year term.
Yesterday, Tancangco blamed the National Movement for Free Elections, and a colleague she did not name for her shortened stint.
Namfrel initiated impeachment proceedings against her in August 2002.
