CITY OF MALOLOS-Officials of the Department of Agriculture in Bulacan have asked farmers not to plant palay in the next planting season to avoid losses due to the looming irrigation water shortage aggravated by the decreasing water level at the Angat Dam. Gigi Carillo, DA officer in Bulacan, said they are asking farmers to avoid planting palay at this time to help them save capital due to expected losses.
The planting season in the province starts in February, between May and June and September.
Carillo said reports from the National Irrigation Administration showed that irrigation water shortage is expected at the end of February until March, when the agency starts a gradual but continuous reduction of water supply in Bulacan's farms.
She said the water shortage is expected to reach its peak in April and May.
The irrigation water needs of the 26,000-hectare farms in Bulacan comes from Angat Dam.
