THE YOUTH of Manila-both in school and out-prefer either former Education Secretary Raul Roco or movie actor Fernando Poe Jr. for president, if the elections were held today.
In mock elections conducted by the youth party-list group Anak ng Bayan on Jan. 26 and 27, students and out-of-school youth in the University Belt and the depressed community surrounding the train tracks near Espana picked Sen. Loren Legarda over Sen. Noli de Castro as their choice for vice president.
"The results of the survey showed that President Macapagal-Arroyo has failed in addressing the concerns of the youth, at least in the city. These are access to quality education and enough employment opportunities," said Apolinario Alvarez, Anak ng Bayan president and first nominee in the party-list race.
"We also see the displacement of families from the "riles" (railroad communities) and the demolition of their shanties as factors for the President's poor third-place rating," Alvarez said.
He said Legarda was the choice of both the students and out-of-school youth because of her experience and track record in the Senate.
