CEBU CITY-Rather than Raul Roco, it is President Macapagal-Arroyo who should withdraw from the presidential race to ensure the defeat of popular movie star and opposition candidate Fernando Poe Jr., former Cebu governor Emilio "Lito" Osmena said yesterday.
Osmena said it was Ms Macapagal who should give way to Roco since the latter had a better chance of winning.
Osmena, who heads the Probinsya Muna Development Initiatives (Promdi), one of the three parties in the Alyansa ng Pag-asa (Alliance of Hope) backing Roco's presidential bid, was reacting to political analysts' suggestion the other day that the Macapagal-Arroyo camp should negotiate with Roco to convince him to withdraw.
The analysts were reviewing the results of the latest Social Weather Station presidential preference survey that showed the President overtaking Roco in second place after Poe.
The SWS survey, conducted between Jan. 16 and Jan. 22, showed Poe leading all presidential aspirants with 36 percent, followed by Ms Macapagal (27 percent) and Roco (19 percent).
