ACTING Public Works Secretary Florante Soriquez yesterday denied reports he has been soliciting millions of pesos from contractors to fill up the campaign kitty of President Macapagal-Arroyo.
In a telephone interview, Soriquez admitted that at least three regional directors of the Department of Public Works and Highways had been using his name in asking for millions from contractors and construction suppliers.
"Laging sinasabi nila, 'Para sa taas ito' (They tell them it is for the higher-ups),'' Soriquez said, adding the money ended up in the pockets of the regional directors. He said he has spoken to the regional directors about this. "So if you hear of any regional director using my name, report him to me," he said.
Oliver Lozano, lawyer for the Marcoses, had alleged that the controversial head of the DPWH was one of the key "fund raisers'' of Ms Macapagal.
"Fund raiser? I'm just doing my job... related to public works,'' Soriquez said.
