VICTIMS of the devastating Jan. 12 fire at the Baseco Compound in Port Area, Manila, have received an unexpected windfall.
The thousands of families who lost their homes in the nine-hour fire got an added boost in rebuilding their lives when World Vision, an international Christian non-government organization, donated a total of $96,000 (over P5 million).
Part of the aid ($40,000), will go to the purchase of relief goods for over 3,000 families, while the rest will go to the building of core shelters for several families in chosen sites within the Baseco Compound, said Minnie Portales, World Vision Philippines' minister area coordinator.
On Thursday, the first batch of relief goods were distributed to 1,800 families at the Department of Public Works and Highways' National Capital Region compound, where most of the Baseco victims have sought shelter.
One family is entitled to a sack of relief goods that contain cooking pots, a mat, a blanket, a mosquito net and a big can of biscuits-all worth P800.
