TAGBILARAN CITY-A rebel leader-turned-civilian volunteer who died in a recent clash with former communist comrades was buried on Friday with full military honors.
Luciano Lapasaran, 43, was given the traditional taps and three volleys of fire in an elaborate send-off that also entailed the naming of the local Army patrol base after him earlier in the day.
Lapasaran was killed over a week ago during an encounter between the government squad to which he belonged and some 40 New People's Army guerrillas.
Top provincial military officials led the ceremony held at the village cemetery in Barangay La Libertad, Sagbayan town, four kilometers from Barangay San Roque, site of the Jan. 22 clash. Also present were representatives of the provincial and municipal government leaders, and the heads of six neighboring villages.
Lapasaran's widow, Lusita, received a posthumous citation and financial assistance from the 302nd Infantry Brigade and the provincial and municipal governments.
