The Benfield Hazard Research Centre is studying the effects of increased solar activity after an unprecedented display of flares last year.
The flares, which were erupted from a group of sunspots in October and November 2003, included the largest one ever recorded and their effects hit the Earth directly, causing the Northern Lights to be seen as far south as Spain and Texas.
The October flares were also blamed for the complete failure of the Japanese Midori 2 satellite, a $587m environmental research spacecraft that had been in space for less than a year.
