No sign of El Nino
The El Nino/La Nina weather phenomenon that hit the Pacific region twice from 1997 to 2003 shows no signs of returning, according to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).
El Nino conditions occur when changes in wind patterns result in unusually warm surface water covering most of the Pacific Ocean. La Nina is the exact opposite, with unusually cold water dominating the ocean.
Both have strong local effects, as well as affecting global weather.
The 1997-1998 El Nino caused a severe drought in Australia, but also resulted in strong storms and torrential flooding along the coasts of North and South America. In Ecuador, Peru and Colombia the storms caused serious damage, with hundreds of people dead from drowning.
