HEALTH authorities yesterday invited the media to a chicken chowdown in an effort to prove that the bird flu virus has not reached the Philippines.

"The message is clear. The Philippines is free from bird flu. This is our way of telling people that it's safe to eat chicken here," Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit said at a press briefing attended by World Health Organization representative Jean Marc Olive.

Journalists invited to the briefing were served fried chicken and rice ordered from a popular fast-food chain in Manila.
