Horse Dreaming.(Poem)

 
HORSE DREAMING 
 
   1. 
 
   The horse is always completely innocent. 
   Perhaps they do not dream. 
 
   I would have to ask my mare. 
   She would loop her neck 
 
   towards her nearest neighbour 
   and to her manger. 
 
   She would refuse to understand me. 
   One ear giving me attention. 
 
   The other listening 
   for danger. 
 
   2. 
 
   The horse is completely innocent. 
   But the dream won't leave me alone. 
 
   I broke every bone in my body 
   and hurt some good horses 
 
   for which God might forgive me 
   but I can't. 
 
   I broke my neck for a ribbon. 
   Why did I want that ribbon? 
 
   I forget. But I wanted it. 
   And want it. 
 
   I always wanted 
   the victory lap. 
 
   3. 
 
   The horse is always innocent. 
   The good horse wants what I want. 
 
   Yes. This is what I had always wanted. 
   The powerful men are tipping their hats. 
 
   This is why I had galloped at fences
