As you'll have seen in our graphic feature on page 34, the FTSE-100 index is 20 years old this month. Officially announced on 13 February 1984, it was calibrated so as to start the year at 1,000. Its first official day of trading on 14 February showed a small rise of 8.7 points to 1,027.0.
But while Eagle Star was an original constituent of the index at its January base point, the company was taken over by BAT Industries and replaced by Charterhouse J Rothschild even before the index was actually announced to the world.
