Of course Pete Rose owes him one, for that fateful 1999 interview at the World Series--Rose, named to the All-Century Team and basking in adoration, stonewalled and fibbed to Gray, who bulldoggedly pointed NBC's microphone at his grille, requesting an admission of betting on baseball.
I remember exclaiming attaboys that night from the La-Z-Boy. There were more notable exceptions (Keith Olbermann and Dick Ebersol supported Gray publicly; Al Davis called privately), but viewers/contemporaries condemned such ... icon ambush. When Chad Curtis hit a walk-off homer the next game, he and the Yankees boycotted the Emmy-winning reporter. Not coincidentally, Gray's career went into partial eclipse.
