While Shostakovich is mainly known for some pretty serious symphonic and small-ensemble music, he occasionally did compose some lighter material, and that is what we have here. While the "jazz" pieces are more like light Broadway fare than real jazz, they do entertain. Surround sound aside, the soundstage exhibits nice clarity and good depth, with plenty of dynamic impact at times.
This is a DVD Audio disc with the usual alternate Dolby Digital (at 448 kbps) and DTS (at 1509 kbps) tracks. Overall, the three technologies seemed subjectively equal in terms of sonics, although the DTS track was 4 to 5 dB louder than the DD track. I suppose this contrast in levels will have some DTS fans lauding their favorite, but louder is not automatically better.
