These days, little is known about Rosetti, who lived from about 1750 until 1792. He was rather obscure in his own day, at least until 1773, when he became a double bass player and livery servant at the court in Wallerstein. There, he discovered that the existing musical ensemble was a very good one, and under his direction, beginning in 1785, it became probably one of the best in Europe. During and after this period he became a prolific composer of symphonies, concertos, chamber music and choral works, and as anyone who hears this disc will probably discover he was surprisingly good at his trade. Indeed, his reputation soon spread throughout Europe and many of his contemporaries considered him to be the equal of Haydn and Mozart in terms of instrumental material, and certainly the presentations here go a long way towards proving them correct.
