The Goners of course are Sony Landreth's band, with David Ranson on bass and Kenneth Blevins on drums, the same band that astonished with Slow Turning lo so many years past. And beneath Hiatt's gruff exterior there's, well, an equally gruff interior. Hiatt opens with "I do my best thinkin' sittin' on my ass" ("Uncommon Connection"), but truth be known he does his best writin' standin' at the mike thrashin' his axe and singin' his ass off. And so he does to as fine an effect as he has in many years, a vast improvement over recent output, even the lauded The Tiki Bar Is Open. This is the gruff, scruffy, utterly uncompromising John Hiatt that, like any sullen cousin, we resolve to love regardless of what he said ...
