How can music as good as this have been overlooked for so long? Two of the three symphonies on this CD are world premier recordings. Ned Rorem (b. 1923) may not be a household word, but most people with an
interest in classical music have probably heard his name.
At any rate, all three of these symphonies are excellent. All three are quite listenable (conductor Jose Serebreier's liner notes make the case that in the '50s, atonal music was the rage, and music like this was simply overlooked), and indeed, more than that, they are quite rewarding to listen to.
If I had to choose a favorite from among these three, it would be Symphony No. 2, which features a long opening movement and then two short movements. The whole work is lyrically delicious, but ...
