For the past six years, I've been using a Terk Pi antenna as the primary "wavecatcher" for the Magnum Dynalab Etude tuner that's my pride and joy. The Pi has been a reasonably good choice and pulls in signals other units I tried couldn't touch. But given our new digs in Cincinnati--high up on a ridge, 250+ feet above the Ohio River valley, I was not receiving as many stations as I thought I should. And a couple that are among my favorites just didn't come in as well as I hoped. So when I saw a positive write-up on the Godar FM-1A, I thought, "Why not give it a try?" I ordered one from a respected mail-order retailer, half expecting that I'd take advantage of their 30-day return privilege.
According to industry websites, Godar Electronics was established in 1987 as an electronics service facility. The company moved into antenna research and development in 1994, with the goal of developing a high-performance antenna line for the consumer market. Godar's first product, the Model FM-1 FM antenna, entered the market in 1995 and received a US patent. Apparently, the FM-1A is an updated version of that first model.
The unit itself is a lopsided hexagon, with one long side and five shorter ones, 17" wide by 9.5" deep and 1" high. It's done up in black hi-impact plastic for fairly inconspicuous placement. There are no controls, simply a 75-ohm "F" connector on the back. It's a fully passive antenna, unlike the Pi, which has an adjustable RF amplifier in it. Godar says the FM-1A can be attached to the tuner with up to 100 feet of coax, although I'd hate to think of the signal losses you'd encounter using a length of cable that great.
