MARINE underwriter Christine Dandridge has become the first woman to be elected as a working member to the Council of Lloyd's, the ultimate governing body of the GBP14.9bn ($26.5bn) market.

Ms Dandridge, executive director of Atrium Underwriters and active underwriter of Atrium syndicate 609, joins the council as a result of the 2004 elections. In the same working member section, Bronek Masojada, chief executive of Hiscox plc, was re-elected to the council.

Ms Dandridge replaces David Robson, who is standing down after three years. The vacancies were uncontested.
