SINCE READERS OF BASEBALL DIGEST HAVE ALWAYS MAINTAINED A STRONG interest in Hall of Fame elections, it might be appropriate to review the recent move by the Hall's board of directors to expand the Veterans Committee and to change the committee's voting procedures for induction into the baseball shrine in Cooperstown, New York.
These alterations do not affect the annual elections by the 500-plus credentialed members of the Baseball Writers Association, but they do rearrange the way in which long-retired or even deceased candidates will be confirmed or denied by the Veterans Committee which has been increased almost six-fold--from 15 to 89 voters.
