Former Batting Champion. Graced Baseball Digest Cover 17 Years Ago
In 1984, the New York Mets challenged the Chicago Cubs for the National League East division title and were led by rookie Dwight Gooden, former Rookie of the Year Darryl Strawberry and veteran first baseman Keith Hernandez.
Hernandez was featured on the cover of the November 1984 issue of Baseball Digest in a story titled "There's A Talent Boom At First Base in The Majors."
Defensively, Hernandez redefined the first base spot with his positioning and flawless glove work. His game revolved around preparation and he would mentally take notes on how to play hitters in the league and position himself accordingly.
He finished his career with 11 Gold Glove Awards--more than any other first baseman in major league history--and a .994 fielding percentage in 2,014 games at first. As a hitter he wasn't powerful, but he was productive and consistent. Hernandez hit .300 six times including a career high .344 in 1979 when he captured the National League batting title and was the league's co-MVP Award winner with Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell.
