"Stops bleeding instantly!" and "Effective for people who bleed easily" are two claims on packages of NosebleedQR (for Ouick Relief), a new, over-the-counter first-aid product. Load OR powder on the enclosed swab, coat the bloody nostril, and pinch the nose for 15 to 20 seconds, the directions say. At a suggested retail price of $7.99, each package contains enough powder and swabs for two applications.

Does it work? OR powder contains a hydrophilic polymer, a synthetic compound that quickly absorbs blood, and potassium salt to help form a scab. It has received Food and Drug Administration clearance as a device, like a bandage.

To substantiate the claims on its labels, Biolife provided CONSUMER REPORTS with a small unpublished clinical study involving 45 people with various wounds. Nosebleeds were treated with NosebleedQR; skin wounds with Biolife's UrgentOR powder, which is marketed for cuts and scrapes but is the same formulation as Nosebleed QR.
