Echinacea, the top-selling herbal remedy in the U.S., seems to do what conventional drugs can't: reduce the length of a cold. That's the conclusion of the latest comprehensive review of the published research. But our tests of 19 echinacea pill supplements found a number of possible problems that could complicate your buying decision:

* Three products had less than the labeled amount of an ingredient that identifies the presence of echinacea. Overall, the amount of that ingredient varied substantially from product to product, even from bottle to bottle of the same product.
