Although laboratory tests can help identify alcoholism in patients who will not disclose a drinking problem to their physicians, abnormal results may herald significant liver damage.
Dr. Michael E. Scott, medical director of Sierra Tucson in Tucson, Ariz., a drug and alcohol treatment facility, said that physical findings of alcoholism in a patient are "9 years too late," since profound damage has already been taking place over that time.
Early identification of alcoholism is more likely with open physician-patient communication and verbal screening questions, but there are some laboratory tests that can aid in the diagnosis, he said at a psychopharmacology conference sponsored by the University of Arizona.
