WASHINGTON -- Hot flashes are common before any observable menstrual irregularities develop in perimenopausal women, Ellen W Freeman, Ph.D., said at an international symposium on women's health and menopause.
"A substantial number of women report hot flashes in their late reproductive years," said Dr. Freeman, professor of ob.gyn. at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
She assessed hot flashes in a population-based cohort of 375 women participating in a study on ovarian aging. The women were aged 35-47 years at entry into the study and experienced regular menstrual cycles. Their experience with hot flashes was assessed using a questionnaire that addressed a broad range of health issues.
A total of 218 women (31%) reported having hot flashes, even though the mean age of the cohort was a relatively young 41 years. ...
