MAUI, HAWAII -- There's no need to subject infertility patients to the pressure of coming in for a postcoital test 2-3 hours after intercourse, Dr. Bill Yee said at a conference on ob.gyn. ultrasound sponsored by the University of California, Irvine.
Having patients return instead the morning after intercourse not only makes this part of the infertility work-up easier on the patient, it provides the physician with more clinically relevant information, he said.
The 2-hour postcoital test simply shows whether sperm is present in the cervical mucus shortly after intercourse. The overnight postcoital test shows whether the cervical mucus still contains sperm 610 hours after intercourse, a factor that could be crucial in a patient's ability to get pregnant, said Dr. Yee, director of the in vitro fertilization program at Long Beach [Calif.] Memorial Medical Center.
A postcoital test should be performed only after a normal result on semen analysis. Dr. Yee uses transvaginal ultrasound and an individualized ovulation chart to pick the best days for intercourse and the postcoital test, based on ovarian follicle growth and cervical mucus quality.
