BETHESDA, MD. -- Highly active antiretroviral therapy appears to protect HIV-positive women against cervical cancer and may decrease the incidence of the disease in this population, Dr. NZiharika Khanna said at an international conference on AIDS malignancy sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.
HIV-positive women have a higher prevalence of cervical disease related to human papillomavirus infection and a higher probability of progressing to cervical cancer than do women who are HIV-negative.
However, the influence of HAART on the prevalence and progression of cervical dysplasia has never been clarified, said Dr. Khanna of the University of Maryland's Greenebaum Cancer Center and the university's department of family medicine in Baltimore.
