ST. JOHN'S, NFLD. -- Use of an open-needle technique for drawing fetal amniotic fluid samples is at least as safe as using a trocar and may be much easier on the patient, Dr. Helen Steed said at the annual meeting of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada.
With the open-needle technique, amniocentesis can be performed under continuous ultrasound guidance in a single position. The perinatologist holds the ultrasound probe in one hand and the needle in the other. Because there's no need to remove a trocar, there's less manipulation, resulting in less patient anxiety and pain, explained Dr. Steed of the department of ob.gyn. at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Edmonton, Alta.
