Three years after the domestic airport terminal building was gutted by fire on May 10, 2000, the reconstruction of the building is still at its foundation level, throwing up problem of safety. Not only has the building not be completed, the report of the panel set up to investigate the remote and immediate cause of the fire is yet to be made public.
Before the fire which completely raised down the building and all there in, the federal government under the regime of General Abdulsalami Abubakar had earlier designated it for demolition with a view to erecting a new terminal building. The reconstruction contract, which was to have been awarded to Julius Berger Plc, was estimated to cost N3.5 billion, including the reconstruction of the road around which the building is located, but which reconstruction was later undertaken by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and …
