The totally integrated National Aluminium Company (Nalco) is one of the lowest cost producers of aluminium in the world. Nalco has a port and generates its own power. It produces aluminium ingots, saws, billets, wire rods, alloy wire rods among other products. Nalco also produces calcined alumina, alumina hydrate and chemical grade speciality alumina and hydrates.

Pechiney, the French collaborator of Nalco has expressed interest in taking over the company and plans to set up a one million tonne, $700-million Greenfield project in Orissa. The Government of India, which holds 87.15 percent stake in Nalco has plans to divest 26 …
