Hongkongers have downloaded an estimated 130 million music tracks from the internet worth about $1 billion without payment in the past 21/2 years, a survey has found.

The poll by marketing information group TNS found that 22 per cent of computer users had downloaded more than 250 tracks, and 48 per cent had downloaded more than 50.

It estimated that 130 million songs, excluding free trial versions, had been downloaded for free in that time.

If each track is valued at $8, similar to what United States consumers are being charged, the downloaded songs are worth about $1 billion. …
