On September 3, Jackson, Mississippi, homeowner Sinartha Bradford heard the glass in his bedroom window being broken by someone who had apparently pulled off the window's burglar bars. As the intruder began climbing into the room, Bradford grabbed a shotgun and fired a single blast that struck and killed career criminal Anthony Mayers.
According to police records, Mayers had been arrested 14 times since 1992, mostly on burglary charges, and had served a number of jail and prison sentences, including four stays at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman.
Another incident in Jackson occurred around 3 a.m. on October 21, when homeowner Tommy Christian heard noises at his back door. Armed with a handgun, he went to investigate and found that someone had forced the door open and was inside the home. Christian shot the interloper, Christopher Stiff, in the abdomen and a leg.
Stiff was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he died about two hours later. He had been arrested more than 30 times ...
