Americans depend on computers for everything from air traffic control to Christmas shopping. Nearly everyone who studies the matter agrees that a terrorist attack that involved computer systems could wreak havoc on vital transportation and communication networks that keep American society humming.
William Webb, a homeland security consultant, and TAE associate editor Eli Lehrer offer a mix of good news and strong cautions when it comes to America's cyber threats. On one hand, the two argue that "doomsday scenarios are hugely improbable": terrorists probably won't be able to launch nuclear missiles, crash airplanes, or cause nuclear reactors to melt down using cyber attacks. On the other, they warn of three main threats that involve cyberspace:
