Dozens of immigrants in New York City have been swiftly deported upon appearing for misleading summons to process their status at Manhattan's Federal Plaza.
Community activists from Families for Freedom and Immigration Defense Project rallied Sunday, Sept. 27, 2003 in front of immigration bureau headquarters to protest the federal government's policy of misleading immigrants to appear at the Federal Plaza in order to speedily deport them without the benefit of legal counsel. Dubbed "Kidnapped at Federal Plaza," the event drew scores of concerned citizens and family members.
"Since the government started the registration program, over 1 million people have been deported," said Ydanis Rodriguez, a Dominican activist. "We're terrified thinking this is what the future will look like for the immigrant families."
The rally highlighted the stories of Juan Jimenez and Howard Facey. Both men were asked to appear at the Federal Plaza, seemingly to report on pending approval of their cases. ...
